The Holy Thief

The commemoration of the holy thief, who, having confessed Christ on the cross, merited to hear from him:  “This day you will be with me in paradise.”

St. Joseph

The solemnity of Saint Joseph, spouse of the most blessed Virgin Mary, who, being a just man and arisen from the stock of David, was a foster father to Jesus Christ the Son of God, who willed to be called the son of Joseph and was subject to him as a son to his father.  The Church venerates with a special honor the patron whom the Lord set over his own family.

Sts. Simeon and Anna

In Jerusalem, the commemoration of Saints Simeon and Anna, one being an old and devout man and the other a widow and a prophetess, merited to greet in infant Jesus as Messiah and Savior, the blessed hope and redemption of Israel, when he had been brought into the Temple to be presented in accordance with the custom of the law.

The memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, bishops, disciples of Saint Paul the Apostle and helpers in his apostolate, one of whom governed the church at Ephesus and the other the church at Crete; to them were written epistles, which offer wise admonitions for pastors and the instruction of the faithful.

Conversion of St. Paul and Commemoration of St. Ananias

January 25

The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, Apostle, to whom–as he was journeying to Damascus, still breathing threats and murder against the Lord’s disciples–Jesus himself revealed himself on the way and chose him so that, filled with the Holy Spirit, he might announce the Gospel of salvation to the gentiles, suffering many things for the name of Christ.

The commemoration of Saint Ananias who, being the Lord’s disciple, baptized the converted Paul at Damascus.

St. David

December 29

The commemoration of Saint David, king and prophet, who, being the son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, found favor with God and was anointed with holy oil by Samuel the prophet that he might rule over the people of Israel; he transferred the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant to the city of Jerusalem, and the Lord himself soon swore to him that his seed would endure forever, because from him would be born Jesus Christ according to the flesh.

The Holy Innocents

December 28

The Feast of the Holy Innocents, martyrs.  These children, who were killed in Bethlehem of Judea by the impious king Herod so that the infant Jesus might perish with them, he whom the Magi had adored, have been honored as martyrs from the earliest days of the Church, the first fruits of all those who would shed their blood for God and for the Lamb.
